Most Muslims know almost by heart the actions that invalidate fasting during the holy month of Ramadan.
Yet alongside these well-known rules, many misconceptions persist about everyday practices that do not break the fast, according to the Khaleej Times.
From medical treatments to personal care routines, uncertainty often leads to unnecessary caution or confusion. Clarifying what does and does not invalidate fasting helps worshippers observe Ramadan with confidence.
Most contemporary scholars agree that fasting is invalidated when a substance enters the body through an open cavity (such as the mouth or nose) and reaches the stomach or digestive system, or when it provides nutritional intake.
Despite some scholarly differences over what invalidates fasting during Ramadan, there are several matters widely agreed upon as not breaking the fast.
In this report, we have compiled 10 things that will not affect your fasting during the holy month of Ramadan according to most religious scholars:
- Toothpaste
Brushing your teeth using toothpaste will not break your fast as long as it does not reach the back of your throat or your stomach because then you would have swallowed the water and paste.
- Nicotine patches
Patches that smokers use to help them quit smoking deliver nicotine through the skin, not through an open body cavity, so nothing enters the stomach or digestive tract. Therefore, they are generally acceptable to use during Ramadan.
- Needles
Taking anesthetic injection for any medical procedure does not break your fast, however, taking nutritional injections does invalidate fasting. If you’re diabetic on insulin, taking your injection while fasting will not break the fast, but it is advised to consult a physician to see if fasting itself is safe for you.
- Vomiting
Deliberate vomiting breaks the fast immediately but if you throw up accidentely, your fasting is still valid.
- Bathing
Soaking your body into water during Ramadan’s fasting hours will not spoil your day as long as it does not invlove swallowing any water.
- Nail polish, creams, hair oils
All beauty products that are applied on the skin or hair are fine to use during fasting.
- Eyedrops
Using eyedrops does not break the fast as long as they do not reach the throat as well.
- Rectal, vaginal suppository
Any use of suppository for medical treatment does not invalidate the fast in anyway.
- Perfumes
Smelling perfumes is something that the faithful do not have to worry about during Ramadan, as they are not fasting breakers.
- Tasting food while cooking
Mothers who taste food while cooking need to not worry about breaking their fast. Tasting in itself does not spoil the fasting, but any swallowing will do.
