The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has extended the deadline for submitting online income tax returns to 31 January, 2026.
Following requests from business leaders and taxpayers, the deadline was initially extended to 31 December. The NBR later granted an additional one-month extension.
The decision was announced in a notification signed by Md Ekramul Haque, second secretary (Tax Law-1) of the NBR, on Sunday.
According to the notification, the deadline has been extended for individual taxpayers and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) in the public interest, exercising the authority granted under Section 334 of the Income Tax Act 2023, with prior approval from the government.
In the current tax year, more than one million taxpayers have already submitted their returns online. The e-return system was formally launched on 4 August, 2025, by Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.
This year, through a special order, online submission of income tax returns has been made mandatory for all individual taxpayers, except senior citizens aged above 65, persons with disabilities or special needs, taxpayers residing abroad, legal heirs of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
However, those exempt from the mandatory requirement may also choose to submit their returns online voluntarily.
The NBR said taxpayers residing abroad can apply by emailing their passport number, national identity card number and email address to [email protected].
In response, a registration link and one-time password (OTP) are sent via email. Upon submitting income, expenditure, assets and liabilities information, taxpayers can instantly receive an acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate without submitting any physical documents.
To assist taxpayers, the NBR has kept its call centre, official website and e-return help desks operational in every tax zone across the country, ensuring quick and efficient support for online return filing.
