The BNP has finally nominated one of its popular leaders Lion Aslam Chowdhury for Chattogram-4 (Sitakunda) constituency.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir formally handed over the nomination certificates to Aslam Chowdhury on Saturday.
As per the revised list of candidates in two parliamentary constituencies in Chattogram, the BNP also nominating Sayeed Al Noman-son of late BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman for for Chattogram-10, which includes Doublemooring, Pahartali, Halishahar and Khulshi areas.
The latest decision overturns the party’s earlier announcement made on 4 December, when Kazi Md Salahuddin, former joint convener of the BNP’s Chattogram North district unit, was named candidate for Chattogram-4. That decision triggered strong reactions from local leaders and activists, culminating in protests and road blockades by supporters of Aslam Chowdhury.
In Chattogram-10, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury was initially nominated. However, the constituency has long been linked with the late Abdullah Al Noman, and his son Sayeed Al Noman had been actively lobbying for the ticket.
Following the reshuffle, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has been reassigned to Chattogram-11 (Bandar-Patenga), a constituency he has previously represented several times and from which he once served as a minister.
With these changes, the BNP has now announced candidates in 15 of Chattogram’s 16 parliamentary constituencies. The party is yet to finalise its nominee for Chattogram-14 (Chandanaish).
BNP Central Organising Secretary for the Chattogram division, Mahbuber Rahman Shamim, confirmed the reshuffle and said that a decision regarding Chattogram-14 remains under consideration.
