On the first day of appeals at the Election Commission (EC) against the Returning Officers’ decisions in the 13th National Election, 51 candidates regained their nominations.
Meanwhile, the appeal of one candidate, whose nomination had initially been accepted, was rejected.
The hearings, held on Saturday from 10am to 5pm, took place at the EC auditorium in the capital’s Agargaon.
Candidates who had appealed against the cancellation of their nominations and their representatives attended the session.
Senior Secretary of the EC Akhtar Ahmed said, “70 appeals were heard on the first day. Of these, 52 appeals were allowed, including one that sought cancellation of a nomination. Fifteen appeals were rejected, while three remain pending.”
The EC has received a total of 645 appeals against Returning Officers’ decisions on nomination papers for the 13th National Election. Appeals were accepted from 5 January to 9 January, with 176 appeals submitted on the final day.
The appeal hearings began on Saturday and will continue until 18 January. On the first day, 70 appeals were heard, and hearings for 280 candidates are scheduled from 10am to 5pm up to next Tuesday.
