BUP debuts ‘Unscripted’ panel with top journos, creators

by Recent News BD June 12, 2026
written by Recent News BD

Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) Media and Communication Club of hosted its inaugural panel discussion, titled “Unscripted 1.0,” on Wednesday at the Shadhinota Auditorium on the university campus.

The event brought together four prominent figures from Bangladesh’s media and entertainment industry for an unfiltered conversation on creativity, resilience, and the responsibilities of working in public spaces.

The session, which ran from 11am to approximately 1:45pm, featured journalist and news presenter Ahmed Reza from Jamuna TV; travel content creator and host of The Apurbo Show, Mehedi Hasan Apurbo; actress and model Sabila Nur; and broadcaster and media personality Dipty Chowdhury from Channel i.

Centred around the question, “What goes on in a creator’s mind?”, the dialogue explored the creative process and the burden of influence beyond polished success stories.

At the commencement of the programme, MCC General Secretary Shanzin Saima Sharita presented the event’s concept and objectives. MCC President Nigar Israt and faculty moderator Lecturer Israt Jahan Oishe also addressed the audience.

The event was hosted by Saima Fardaus Kotha and Saira Nur, while the panel discussion was moderated by Mustak Shahriar Shuvo and Tanjima Nusrat Chowdhury.

The Chief Guest, Lieutenant Colonel Mahmud Hasan Tariq, PPM, PPMS, PSC, Chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at BUP, formally welcomed the panelists. He noted that the initiative was made possible through the collective efforts of the MCC family.

During the discussion, Dipty Chowdhury reflected on life’s unpredictability, noting that while fortune may open doors, long-term success depends on how individuals handle the challenges that test them.

Mehedi Hasan Apurbo emphasised the importance of maintaining authenticity, describing it as both the greatest challenge and achievement in today’s media environment.

He encouraged students to learn through mistakes during their university years, adding, “I am just trying to enjoy the process,” and citing Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo’s philosophy as a personal inspiration.

Ahmed Reza highlighted the necessity of resilience and self-awareness in identifying one’s strengths, sharing how debate practice helped develop his own communication skills.

Sabila Nur encouraged the audience to take “leaps of faith,” stating that the choices made in response to life’s repeated signals ultimately shape one’s journey.

The event also included a mid-session game segment to provide a lighter moment. In the closing ceremony, Chief Guest Lieutenant Colonel Mahmud Hasan Tariq presented crests and tokens of appreciation to the panelists.

The MCC, a student-led organisation under the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, aims to bridge academic learning with the evolving digital and mainstream media landscape.

Organisers noted that Unscripted 1.0 marks the first major panel discussion of its kind for the club, with plans to continue the series in future editions.

Now it’s our turn to rise: Prime Minister

by Recent News BD June 12, 2026

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed his resolve to rebuild a new democratic Bangladesh. He stated that the prolonged fascist rule of over a decade and a half not only deprived the people of their democratic and political rights but also weakened and damaged various state institutions, including the education system. However, a democratic environment has now created an opportunity for the country’s reconstruction.

He made these remarks as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of the ‘Teacher Training on Vocational and Technical Education’ program at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the capital on Sunday (June 7).

The Prime Minister emphasized that the contributions of those who sacrificed their lives for independence, liberation war, establishment of democracy, and protection of people’s freedom must be duly recognized. For this, he stressed the importance of building a knowledge-based state and society. He added that it would be difficult to face future global competition and challenges if we fail to empower ourselves in education, science, technology, and research.

Highlighting the importance of the National University, Tarique Rahman said that this institution can play a significant role in expanding modern and technology-driven higher education in the country. Currently, the National University has over two thousand affiliated colleges, with approximately 40 lakh students studying there. Additionally, more than one crore students have had the opportunity to pursue higher education since its establishment. He also mentioned that former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia established the National University in 1992 to expand higher education and ensure equality of opportunity.

The Prime Minister stated that the world has now entered the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation technology is not only creating new challenges in employment but also opening up new possibilities. In this reality, there is no alternative to a skill-based, technology-driven, and vocational education system, rather than just certificate-based education.

He further added that it is essential to include subjects such as Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Forensic Science, Programming, Digital Entrepreneurship Development, Digital Communication, Leadership, Presentation Skills, and Financial Literacy in modern curricula. Alongside, he emphasized the importance of acquiring knowledge about emerging technologies like Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology, Quantum Computing, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Material Science, Nanotechnology, and 3D Printing.

Tarique Rahman informed that, considering future demands, the government has already initiated steps to develop a practical, diversified, vocational, and technology-driven curriculum from primary to higher education levels.

He said that in this era of research, innovation, and technological excellence, the revision and reform of educational curricula is an ongoing process. Realizing this, the National University authorities have already taken effective steps to make the university’s curriculum labor-friendly, modern, and practical. Today’s event, the teacher training program on skill-based education organized by the National University, is a practical reflection of these efforts.

The Prime Minister stated that education is not only for individual change but also the primary determinant of a technology-dependent nation’s economic progress, innovation, and world-class competitive capability. Therefore, increasing coordination between the industrial sector and universities to make the higher education system more technology-driven and vocational is now a demand of time.

He said that the modernization of the education system is extremely important in this ongoing era of technological advancement. However, when I talk about the future Bangladesh that awaits us, I try to mention that there is no alternative to moral education for becoming a humane person. He urged the National University authorities to give greater importance and care to ethics, humanitarian values, social inclusion, and environmental protection for students, alongside technological dependence, skill development, and modernization in the education system.

Tarique Rahman said that every year, lakhs of students graduate from universities after pursuing higher education. Sadly, many of them remain unemployed even after obtaining higher degrees. Many believe that failing to acquire practical, applied, or technological skills, despite achieving the highest academic certificates, is one of the main reasons for the high unemployment rate among educated individuals. Therefore, considering the situation, the current government aims to take effective steps to enhance apprenticeships, internships, and industry-academia linkages to make the higher education system practical.

He said that initially, this initiative is being implemented by establishing relationships between universities located in divisional cities and local industries and business organizations. As a result, students will be able to acquire professional skills during their academic life. Consequently, they may not have to remain unemployed after completing their education, Insha’Allah.

The Prime Minister further said that the government is also taking multifaceted initiatives to create business entrepreneurs from campuses. As part of this, the government has decided to provide seed funding or innovation grants through a competitive process to commercialize innovative business ideas in colleges and universities. This will enable many interested young entrepreneurs to implement new and creative business ideas and contribute to the national economy. By acquiring practical work skills while still students, they will not have to wait for a job; instead, they will be able to become entrepreneurs themselves and create employment for several others.

MV Malancha suspension disrupts Sandwip travel, fare hike alleged

by Recent News BD June 12, 2026
written by Recent News BD

Passengers travelling between Sandwip and the mainland faced severe disruption after Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC)’s only passenger vessel, MV Malancha, suddenly suspended operations.

The shutdown left thousands of commuters stranded, while allegations of extra fare collection on the Kumira–Guptachara route surfaced.

The vessel master Amir Hossain announced the service schedule at 5pm on Wednesday as usual. However, at 7pm, he issued a fresh notice stating that operations on the Chattogram Guptachara–Banshbaria route had been temporarily suspended due to technical faults.

The service had only resumed on 10 June after remaining halted for two consecutive days due to rough sea conditions and Local Warning Signal No 3. But the ferry service again stopped from Thursday morning, 11 June, after mechanical issues developed.

In the morning, MV Malancha was scheduled to depart from Guptachara Ghat in Sandwip, but the trip was cancelled due to technical problems. The vessel was then kept at the jetty while emergency repair work began.

Master Amir Hossain said a fault was detected in the vessel’s gear system. He said the day’s trip was cancelled and repair work was underway. However, he could not confirm when the vessel would resume operations.

Alongside the passenger vessel, ferries operate on the Banshbaria–Guptachara route carrying passengers and vehicles. Speedboats and trawlers also operate on the Kumira–Guptachara route. However, rough seas and adverse weather during the monsoon season make travel on these smaller vessels risky. As a result, most passengers depend on ferries and the passenger vessel for safe travel.

With the suspension of MV Malancha, passenger pressure increased at Kumira Ghat. Taking advantage of the situation, speedboat operators allegedly charged Tk300 instead of the fixed fare of Tk260.

Passenger Sajul Kabir Saed said there was heavy crowding at Kumira Ghat in the morning. He said ticket seller Alamgir informed passengers that no ticket would be sold below Tk300.

Repeated attempts to contact ticket seller Alamgir for comment were unsuccessful as his mobile phone remained switched off.

Passengers said they mainly depend on the vessel and ferries for safe travel during the monsoon season. They demanded quick repair of MV Malancha and restoration of normal passenger transport services on the route.

World Cup 2026: Raul Jimenez completes comeback in Mexico win

by Recent News BD June 12, 2026
written by Recent News BD

Rubio, who also had spells as assistant manager at Crystal Palace and West Ham, felt Jimenez fully deserved such a moment after what he has been through.

“After his head injury it took a bit of time to get back into the career,” said Rubio.

“There were not just medical concerns, but also would he be the same killer in front of goal? His application is tremendous, he is a lovely guy, his family are beautiful and very supportive and that has helped him.

“He is a very family person. He is a big player but never acts like one and he is very humble and I’m delighted for him.

“It was life-threatening injury and I felt scared for him. At that moment he was doing so well, he was at the top of his career and it was very difficult.”

But Jimenez’s determination has led to him scoring 68 Premier League goals in 233 appearances. Even now, he still needs to wear a reinforced headband to protect himself from further injury.

“Having known him I could see why he has been able to get back on to the pitch [after the injury] and get back into his form,” added Rubio. “He is a fighter. I worked with him in his last year at Wolves. There were doubts, even with himself, that he was going to get back into it and that last year at Wolves was a challenging year for him.

“But there were no doubts for me personally, I always knew he would get back into it. I’ve worked with many top professionals and you can see he has the resilience and has a lovely family supporting him.

“Everyone there [at Wolves] loved him, the whole club wanted him to do well and the whole club was invested for him to get back so it was very emotional, not only because of his career, but also because he is such a loving character.

“He was so invested in the club, the city and his family felt like it was home, that’s why I feel they will be delighted to be going back there.”

But, before Jimenez will be back in the West Midlands, he has further chances to score more World Cup goals in his home country, with Mexico already in a strong position to advance into the knockout rounds.

RSF drone strikes kill at least 15 in central Sudan

by Recent News BD June 12, 2026
written by Recent News BD

At least 15 people were killed and dozens more injured after drone attacks by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) hit the central city of El-Obeid overnight, health officials reported on Thursday.

The strikes mark an escalation in the use of unmanned aircraft in Sudan’s ongoing conflict.

The attacks, which began late Wednesday, targeted multiple locations in El-Obeid, including areas near a military post, according to hospital officials. More than 10 people were wounded, some critically, reports AP/UNB.

Mohamed Elsheikh, spokesperson for the Sudan Doctors Network, said RSF drones also struck a funeral at a cemetery, killing four individuals, and hit a local gas station. It remains unclear whether the casualties were civilians, combatants, or both.

A Mercy Corps aid worker noted that drone strikes have intensified in recent days, disrupting daily life and prompting the closure of schools and the partial operation of local markets due to security concerns.

Emergency Lawyers, a local monitoring group, warned that the death toll could rise as drones continued to patrol the city. They reported residential buildings near the 5th Infantry Division headquarters were hit, along with a food supply truck, whose driver was killed.

The group described the strikes as part of a broader pattern of attacks on civilian areas, gatherings, and essential infrastructure, including during funerals and rescue operations, raising concerns over indiscriminate targeting.

Sudan’s conflict, which erupted in April 2023 following a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, has killed at least 59,000 people, displaced roughly 13 million, and left millions facing famine, with over 30 million needing humanitarian aid.

Now in its fourth year, the war has left the SAF controlling much of northern, eastern, and central Sudan, while the RSF and allied groups hold most of Darfur and parts of Kordofan—regions rich in oil and gold.

Analysts and humanitarian organisations warn that drone warfare has emerged as one of the deadliest threats to civilians, with both sides reportedly receiving support from regional and international actors.

A recent rise in drone strikes in Kordofan has further hampered humanitarian relief efforts.
