In a noteworthy address to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized that India’s G20 Presidency has played a vital role in invigorating the country’s foreign policy. He further highlighted that India’s G20 leadership aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of an “Atmanirbhar and Viksit Bharat,” a self-reliant and developed India reclaiming its rightful place globally.
Assuming the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2022, India has strategically directed attention to pressing global challenges, particularly those developing nations face. Jaishankar highlighted initiatives like Mission LiFE for promoting climate-friendly lifestyles and the popularization of millets to address food security concerns. Additionally, India advocated an inclusive “human-centric approach” to climate action and development and the transformative use of technology to improve lives.
The G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting in Varanasi, Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting in Hyderabad, Tourism Ministers’ Meeting in Goa, and other ministerial gatherings across India have exemplified the nation’s commitment to making its Presidency a truly national endeavor while showcasing India’s potential to the world.
India’s people-centric foreign policy, guided by the demands and aspirations of its society, has gained international recognition as a voice for peace, security, and prosperity. Prime Minister Modi’s bilateral visits to various nations, participation in the Quad and G7 meetings, and co-chairing the 3rd Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation Summit further solidified India’s position as a credible and effective global partner.
India’s development partnership has expanded to cover 78 countries, earning praise for its demand-driven, transparent, empowerment-oriented, and environmentally friendly approach. The country has also been at the forefront of promoting digital public infrastructure and sharing best practices in digital governance, particularly in the Global South.
EAM Jaishankar’s address reaffirmed India’s proactive role in global affairs, its dedication to inclusive development, and its standing as a reliable and credible partner on the world stage.
