The “July 24 Jagoroni” Hall Sangsad of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has launched a unique initiative titled ‘Iftar-e-Dastarkhan’ to provide Iftar packs to female students for only Tk10 during the holy month of Ramadan.
The programme commenced on Thursday afternoon in front of the hall gate. Each Iftar pack includes dates, a banana, chickpeas, puffed rice, and either beguni or piyaju.
The organisers said while the programme is open to all female students, those facing financial difficulties can collect the Iftar for free without disclosing their identity.
Nahdatun Hasana, the vice president (VP) of the Hall Sangsad, explained that the initiative aims to foster an environment for breaking fast together while supporting students during Ramadan.
Although the initial plan was to provide Iftar for 100 students daily, the turnout on the first day exceeded expectations. Due to limited funding, the organisers have decided to conduct the programme every other day for the time being.
“We will distribute Iftar to 100 students on a first-come, first-served basis starting from 4:45 pm,” said Nahdatun.
She added that the scope of the initiative could be expanded in the future if sufficient support is secured.
A student participant noted that the opportunity to obtain Iftar at such a low price is helpful for many and suggested that more students would benefit if the initiative were made regular.
