A four-member delegation from the Institute of Information Technology (IIT) at Jahangirnagar University (JU) took part in the Second International Training Programme on “Smart Renewable Energy” at Politecnico di Milano in Italy under the SOHO Erasmus+ Project.
The five-day programme, organised as part of the project’s capacity-building initiatives, brought together faculty members and researchers from partner institutions in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Vietnam and several European countries. It aimed to strengthen participants’ technical knowledge and practical skills in renewable energy technologies, particularly photovoltaic (PV) systems, while promoting academic collaboration and international knowledge exchange.
The JU delegation comprised Prof Dr Risala Tasin Khan, Prof Dr Md Sazzadur Rahman, Dr Rashed Mazumder and Prof Dr M Shamim Kaiser. The delegates participated in technical sessions, laboratory demonstrations and discussions with international experts.
The programme began with an introductory session on electrical quantities conducted by Alessandro Niccolai, followed by a lecture on photovoltaic systems by Sonia Leva, who discussed solar energy technologies, PV system architecture, operating principles and the role of photovoltaic energy in achieving global sustainability goals.
Participants also received hands-on training at the SolarTechLab, where Alejandro González Moreno introduced photovoltaic modules, measurement instruments, laboratory equipment and experimental procedures used in solar energy research.
Other sessions focused on photovoltaic system performance analysis and preliminary system design, led by Emanuele Giovanni Carlo Ogliari, while Nicoletta Matera discussed the economic evaluation of photovoltaic systems, including investment analysis and financial feasibility. Michael Wood later conducted a practical workshop on using open-access software to estimate photovoltaic energy production based on geographical and environmental conditions.
The delegation also visited the Sustainable Simulation Lab, where Michela Longo and her research team demonstrated advanced simulation techniques and ongoing research in sustainable energy systems.
The programme concluded with a networking dinner hosted by Politecnico di Milano and attended by Vladimir Tanasiev, providing participants with an opportunity to explore future academic and research collaborations.
According to the organisers, the participation reflects Jahangirnagar University’s growing engagement in international academic collaboration and is expected to contribute to strengthening renewable energy education, research and innovation at the university.
