Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has extended his warmest congratulations to Andy Burnham on his election as leader of the Labour Party and assumption of office as the UK prime minister.
Burnham took power on Monday, promising a 10-year plan to ease cost-of-living pressures and restore political stability.
In a letter sent to the UK prime minister on Monday, Tarique said, “On behalf of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh and the People of Bangladesh, and on my own behalf, I extend my warmest congratulations to Your Excellency on your election as the Leader of the Labour Party and your assumption of office as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.”
The Bangladesh prime minister said Burnham’s election reflects the confidence and trust reposed in his leadership by his party and the people of the United Kingdom.
“I am confident that, under your able stewardship, the United Kingdom will continue to advance peace, prosperity, democratic governance, and sustainable development, while making valuable contributions to addressing global challenges.”
Tarique said Bangladesh and the United Kingdom enjoy a long-standing, historic, and multifaceted partnership founded on shared democratic values, mutual respect, Commonwealth principles, and close people-to-people ties.
“Our bilateral relationship has grown steadily over the decades across trade and investment, development cooperation, climate action, education, security, migration, and cultural exchanges. The vibrant British-Bangladeshi diaspora continues to serve as a unique bridge of friendship, making invaluable contributions to the prosperity and cultural vibrancy of both our respective countries.”
Tarique said he looks forward to working closely with Burnham to further strengthen the strategic partnership and expand cooperation in areas of mutual interest for the benefit of both countries and their people.
He also invited the new UK prime minister to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time.
“Please accept, Your Excellency, my best wishes for your good health, personal well-being, and every success in discharging the high responsibilities of your office. I wish the friendly people of the United Kingdom continued peace, progress, and prosperity,” Tarique added.
