BNP Secretary General and Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said the party seeks to amend the constitution, not reform it.
Speaking at a memorial meeting marking the sixth death anniversary of Professor Emajuddin Ahmed, Fakhrul said the BNP remains committed to implementing the July Charter in full.
“We will implement the July Charter. We will uphold every word of it. That is our commitment,” he said.
Clarifying the party’s position on constitutional changes, Fakhrul said, “We have always maintained that we want to amend the constitution. We have never said that we want constitutional reform.”
He described the July uprising as the culmination of a long struggle against what he termed fascism, adding that it was the result of years of resistance.
Fakhrul also alleged that some opposition parties were making provocative statements in an attempt to mislead and incite the public.
