Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has informed the Speaker of Parliament and the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of the expulsion of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam and requested necessary action regarding the matter.
The party expelled Gazi Nazrul on Wednesday after a video showing a ‘private moment’ involving him circulated on social media.
In letters sent to the Speaker and the CEC on Thursday afternoon, Jamaat said an organisational investigation into reports published in various media outlets regarding Gazi Nazrul had found him guilty of moral turpitude. He was subsequently expelled from the party under Article 62 of the Jamaat constitution.
The letters said the decision was unanimously taken at an emergency meeting of Jamaat’s Central Executive Council held on Wednesday, chaired by Opposition Leader and Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.
The party requested the EC to take necessary action against Gazi Nazrul Islam.
Jamaat Publicity and Media Secretary Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer told reporters on Thursday afternoon that the letters had been sent to the Election Commission and the Speaker of Parliament at around 3:30pm.
