
BRAC University hosted a daylong programme at its Merul Badda campus in Dhaka on Monday, commemorating the life and contributions of its founder, Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, on his 90th birthday.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar also formally launched the university’s 25th anniversary celebrations by unveiling the Silver Jubilee logo, reads a press release.
BRAC University was founded on 16 June, 2001.
The programme titled “Celebration of Abed Bhai’s Life and Legacy”, aimed to honour Sir Abed’s enduring values, which continue to inspire efforts toward building a just, inclusive and compassionate society.
It began in the morning with a photo exhibition highlighting how the BRAC founder advanced social development in Bangladesh and beyond.
At the same time, the Sir Fazle Hasan Abed Open Rated Chess Tournament 2026 featured participation from over 300 players from across the country, paying tribute to his commitment to nurturing human potential.
A friendly six-a-side football match titled “Jiboner Joygaan Football Match” was also organised featuring players from BRAC Secondary School of Purbogangabordi (Faridpur Sadar) and BRAC University. The initiative reflected his belief in inclusivity, youth empowerment and community building.
In the afternoon, students presented cultural performances, including music, dance and artistic expressions inspired by his ideals. The segment was moderated by Office of Communications Director Khairul Basher.
The programme concluded with Board of Trustees Chairperson Tamara Hasan Abed and Member Salahdin Irshad Imam, along with the vice-chancellor, Treasurer Ariful Islam and Registrar Dave Dowland, distributing awards of the football tournament.
“We have a yearlong extensive list of celebrations, recognitions, togetherness…building bonds with ourselves, the ecosystem, with partners abroad…we will be involving everybody,” Tamara said.
Among others, BRAC Institute of Languages Advisor Lady Syeda Sarwat Abed and Student Life Joint Director Tahsina Rahman were present.
