The University of Chittagong (CU) administration has suspended all classes and pre-scheduled examinations on Wednesday due to continuous heavy rainfall, severe waterlogging, and an ongoing transport crisis,. However, the university’s administrative and office operations remain functional,.
The decision led to the postponement of scheduled examinations across five departments. A notification regarding the suspension, signed by Acting Registrar Mohammed Saiful Islam, was issued around 7:30am.
He confirmed the situation, stating, “All classes and examinations have been declared closed today due to the inclement weather. However, the university offices remain open, and official activities will proceed as normal”.
Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Mohammed Al-Amin explained that the majority of the university’s teachers and students reside within Chittagong city. He noted that excessive rainfall has submerged both roads and the shuttle train tracks, creating significant commuting obstacles. The suspension was implemented to alleviate the hardships faced by students.
Regarding the academic impact, he mentioned that provisions exist for making such decisions during natural disasters. Al-Amin assured that the move would not negatively affect students’ academic progress, as missed sessions will be addressed through makeup classes and rescheduled examinations, thereby avoiding any risk of session jams.
The region has experienced three days of relentless heavy rain, causing waterlogging in various parts of Chittagong city and effectively disrupting transport to the campus. Key transport links, including the shuttle train tracks, were submerged at several points, and buses intended for teachers were unable to depart for the campus.
