Authorities at Jahangirnagar University (JU) have detained a female student allegedly along with cannabis from Nawab Faizunnesa Hall.
The accused, Sanjida Amir Inisha, is a student of the 2018–19 academic session (48th batch) of the Drama and Dramatics Department and a resident of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall.
Hall authorities caught her red-handed while consuming drugs in room 116 of Nawab Faizunnesa Hall on Saturday evening. The room belongs to Tanuja Tithi, a student of the 2021–22 academic session (51st batch) of the Management Studies Department. Inisha reportedly entered the room and consumed drugs there.
Acting on a complaint filed by hall union General Secretary Sumaiya Khanom, hall Warden Sultana Akter conducted a raid on the room and detained Inisha with the drugs.
Later, Fatema Tuz Johora, a 49th batch student of the Zoology Department and general secretary of Begum Khaleda Zia Hall Union, arrived at the spot and took Inisha away.
Denying the allegation of drug use, Fatema said, “Inisha was only smoking cigarettes as she was suffering from mental distress.”
Nawab Faizunnesa Hall Provost Md Golam Mostafa said, “The accused student is a resident of a neighbouring hall. We informed the hall authorities concerned and their secretary came and took her away. We locked the room as its assigned occupant was absent.”
He added that authorities seized cannabis and other intoxicants from the room and informed the university proctor, who instructed them to submit an investigation report.
Meanwhile, authorities have formed a five-member committee, headed by Warden Sultana Akter, to investigate the incident. The committee has been asked to submit its report within three days.
