Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU) celebrated the Bengali New Year 1433 with colourful processions, traditional food, cultural performances, and heartfelt warmth as the campus transformed into a vibrant hub of Bengali heritage on Tuesday.
A grand Baishakhi procession was brought out on 14 April, led by Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr GKM Mustafizur Rahman. Teachers, students, staff, their families, and school children joined the procession, which moved from July 36 Square to the Baishakhi Chattar accompanied by rhythmic claps, colourful masks, and chants of “Esho He Boishakh.”
The campus was adorned with banners, festoons, and traditional alpana, reflecting a deep-rooted cultural identity.
A Baishakhi fair, inaugurated by the vice-chancellor, featured 17 stalls showcasing traditional food, handicrafts, ornaments, clothing, and toys, offering visitors a vivid glimpse into Bengal’s rich heritage.
“Pohela Baishakh is more than a celebration, it is a reflection of our culture, unity and the inspiration for new beginnings. We must embrace our Bengali identity in its fullest sense,” the vice-chancellor said in his address. He extended New Year greetings, wishing all a peaceful, prosperous, and fulfilling year ahead.
The cultural segment of the programme, organised by the university’s Cultural Club, featured performances of music, dance, and recitation by teachers, students, and children. Traditional songs and performances brought alive the timeless beauty of Bengali culture, creating a lively and emotionally resonant atmosphere.
