A colourful Baishakhi Mela began on Tuesday afternoon at the Lake Park in Gulshan-2, organised by the Gulshan Society to celebrate the Bengali New Year 1433, drawing praise from the US ambassador for Bengali culture and music.
The event commenced with performances by the Porompra Music Academy, followed by an evening performance of Rabindra Sangeet by renowned artiste Rezwana Choudhury Bannya. A notable feature of the programme was an art exhibition featuring works by renowned painters.
Other attractions included a handicrafts exhibition, an array of clothing items, children’s toys, and a food section featuring a variety of delicacies.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen, Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan Milton, and people from various walks of life visited the festival under the supervision of Gulshan Society President Barrister Omar Sadat.
The mela became a unique example of harmony, with women, men, children, and the elderly gathering regardless of religion, caste, or age.
Speaking during his visit, Ambassador Christensen highly praised the event and Bengali culture, music, and songs. He said he had recently arrived in Dhaka and was delighted to participate in such an event, expressing the view that Bangladesh’s culture and civilisation represent an advanced national identity.
Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said, “We want such events to be organised from all societies. We are providing support for these events. We want city dwellers to remain in a festive spirit.”
Gulshan Society President Barrister Omar Sadat said, “To keep the city alive, cultural events must be organised. A city is not just concrete or buildings; to keep the city alive, people must be engaged in various events.”
