NARAYANGANY Security for the Hindu community is a constitutional right rather than an act of charity, Narayanganj City Corporation Administrator Adv. Md. Sakhawat Hossain Khan said on Saturday.
Speaking as the chief guest at a views-exchange meeting organized by the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad (Narayanganj district and city units) at the Sri Sri Gopal Jiu Temple in Chashara, Sakhawat reaffirmed the government’s commitment to equal rights and safety for all citizens. The event was held ahead of the upcoming Janmashtami festival.
“The government is actively working to ensure equal rights and security for every citizen,” Sakhawat said. “Maintaining communal harmony and building a strong, discrimination-free city is our primary goal. Security for the minority community is not a favor; it is your constitutional civic right.“
He assured full support and tight security from the city corporation and local police administration to ensure the Janmashtami procession on September 4 proceeds peacefully and smoothly.
Addressing the gathering as the keynote speaker, Narayanganj City BNP Member Secretary Adv. Abu Al Yusuf Khan Tipu emphasized party leadership’s commitment to protecting religious minorities.
“Our political leader Tareq Rahman has given clear instructions to ensure no disruption occurs during any religious event of the Hindu community,” Tipu stated, adding that party members will stand alongside minority communities to maintain a non-communal society.
Speakers at the meeting also urged organizers to complete the festival procession within the designated timeframe, taking the timing of Friday’s Jummah prayers into account to preserve local order and religious harmony.
The event was chaired by Shankar Kumar Dey, president of the Narayanganj District Puja Udjapan Parishad, and conducted by Sushil Kumar Das. Key local leaders, temple committee members, and advisors were in attendance.
