Professor Dr Abdullah-al-Mamun, a member of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh, said on Thursday that the government is now placing significant emphasis on human resource development alongside infrastructural improvements in the higher education sector.
He made these remarks while visiting the “Teachers’ Professional Skill Development Training” programme held at the Bangladesh Open University (BOU) on 25 June 2026. UGC informed this in a press release issued on issued on the same day.
Professor Mamun noted that the transformation of higher education is a primary objective of the current government. To achieve this, priority is being given to academic advancement, increased research funding, and teacher training.
He explained that while infrastructure was the main focus in the past, various programmes are now being implemented with human resource development at their centre.
According to the UGC member, training activities aimed at enhancing the skills of teachers and administrators will help increase service quality, transparency, and accountability within universities.
He further highlighted that the government’s election manifesto also prioritises human resource development, teacher training, and research alongside physical infrastructure in the education sector.
In a bid to modernise universities, initiatives have been taken to increase the use of digital technology. For this purpose, the UGC is working in coordination with the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division.
The training programme was organised under the Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT) project, which is being implemented with the support of the World Bank.
The UGC is conducting a series of such training sessions under the HEAT project to improve the quality of higher education and enhance the professional capacity of university teachers.
The visit was attended by Professor Dr Mohammad Zahir Raihan, Director of IQAC at BOU; Professor Selina Zaman, Head of the Training Branch of the HEAT project; and Program Officer Sultana Razia, among other concerned officials.
